I trained and qualified in Paarl (my home town) in 1971 but moved to Sea Point to further my career.   I worked on a construction site for B. Joffe and Company during 1970 where, as part of a team, we were in charge of installing all the electrical power at a large underground shopping mall, the Strand Concourse, beneath Adderley and Strand Streets.   After a few years with the company, I had gained extensive experience in electrical work, which encouraged me to further my career.   I subsequently found employment as a maintenance electrician at the Nico Malan Theatre (now Artscape Theatre).

In 1978 I decided to establish my own electrical business (JS Electrical).   I set up shop in a VW Kombi during the first few years and invoices were prepared by my wife/secretary in the spare bedroom of our rented flat.

Through word of mouth my business has successfully grown into a thriving company.   I have a number of regular clients and developers with whom I work on an ongoing basis – running onsite developments and household maintenance.  I have nine staff members comprising five Congolese, two Zimbabweans and two Xhosas.   We are one big family.

Our technical expertise enables us to offer an excellent service and we use high quality materials.   My main business consists of upper class, high-end houses which are built from the ground up or are being renovated.   I have a full team who do maintenance work in office blocks, hotels, shopping centres and private residences, etc.   I am also retrofitting stores from the normal 220 volt lamps to the new LED’s.   Stores that have been retrofitted include Spar in Woodstock;  Pick & Pay, Sable Square in Milnerton;  Pick & Pay in Kuilsriver and Spar in Paarl East.   This part of my business is new and I am moving into the sector of retrofitting with enthusiasm.
